  2. Where can we find the criteria for what novels are worthy?

  3. What’s teh deadline for nominees and the proceure for choosing the winner? When will the results be announced?

  4. Cheryl, I’ve added your nominations. Thanks.

Sue, some of this is still being worked out. What we talked about last year regarding the judging criteria is posted here. I think that’s still what we’re agreed on.

Cathi, I haven’t set a deadline for nominations yet, partly because I don’t know how fast this will get out to all interested persons who might like to be a part of the process. I know I brought this award up recently and whoever I was talking to was unaware we had started the process last year. As soon as we have a timetable set, we’ll get the word out.

  5. I wanted to nominate LB Graham’s 4th book in his excellent Binding of The Blade series. The title of this book is “Father Of Dragons”, published by P&R Publishers.

  8. How about the Book of Joby? Don’t know if the author considers himself Christian.

    There was also God’s Demon.

  9. Becky and all–

In the writing sphere of my life, which has been-around for 34 years, nomination for the CS Award rates only equal to actual publication on my personal thrill-meter.
Winning the Whitewater Literary conference in High School, and the Elfie for sci-fi chapter fiction shocked and elated me. I’m told Flashpoint will be nominated at yellow30sci-fi.com for the Pluto Award next month–that’s important to me because it’s exclusively awarded to Christian and Biblical sci-fi novelists. As Becky noted in her Fantasy Here, Fantasy There, Fantasy Everywhere article, that sub-genre has finally broken through. Spiritual-thrillers have also seen some degree of success. Sci-fi still languishes even though it’s such a powerful fiction-ministry tool.
To be included on the CS Award’s list of artists just stuns me. You’ve no idea how much this means. I told Tosca Lee I’ve yet to wrap my mind around the published-novelist concept, and that nomination for the CS Award is so far outside my box that it’s just not real. I’ve personally thanked the people who nominated Flashpoint, but I’d like to do so publicly, and also thank those of you who are investing your own time to run the Clive Staples Award.
I know the award is meant to supplement ECPA awards who have no category for spec-fic. The Christy’s now have a “Visionary” category, in which Sharon Hinck’s fiction (GO SHARON!), is competing. I can’t recall–was this the specific contest for which the CS Award was founded?

Just wanted to attempt to let ya’ll know how much you’ve encouraged me. In spite of my love for what I’m driven to write, I ask myself if my time wouldn’t be better spent serving in a soup-kitchen. I take this as a HUGE sign that I’m doing what the Boss wants.

    Faith,

  11. I second the nomination for Wind Follower by Carole McDonnell. (Juno)
Carole creates a new world, new traditions, and cleverly demonstrates the perils of worshiping false Gods.
I loved this story and was hooked on the first sentence.

  12. Thanks, Frank! Thanks Lisa!

I wonder: what are the guidelines? We don’t have much bucks to give the winner but am just wondering… what are the benefits of being nominated and of being given the top award? What will we commit as a group to do for celebrating the award and the awardee and making them known to blogworld and to the media? I know we have some artists…is anyone designing a logo?

Currently the Carl Brandon society is touring/celebrating Asian-Pacific writers for Asian-Pacific Islander month. We’re learning how to promote every day. We chose a list of writers to promote and sent the list to various spec sites — regardless of race, religion, etc. We gave the list to libraries, bookstores, etc. We posted them on blogs. And we’re having a carnival. And the month isn’t even over yet.

  14. Frank, thanks for your comments and your nomination (and your second, Lisa ;-) ). I’ve added Wind Follower.

Carole, I think the things you’re talking about as far as promotion of this award and the eventual winner are excellent. It’s exactly what I hope to see. Thing is, we are still a small committee trying to get this off the ground. We will do what we can to make it as good as we can, but I don’t want to put up a list of things that we end up not fulfilling.

Look for the judging standards soon.

BTW, right now I’m looking at the end of May as the cut off date for nominations. There are a lot more books that came out in 2007, but I’m not interested in quantity. Just quality. Books that a reader believes deserves this recognition.

Also Carole, you mentioned a couple books but I don’t have enough information about and don’t have the time to do research on. So if the novels meet the basic requirements—speculative, royalty paying, in English, Christian worldview, published in 2007—then I need title, author, and publishing house. Thanks.

  15. My vote goes to George L. Duncan’s A WINE RED SILENCE

  16. Hi, George,

Thanks for weighing in. This is actually not a voting situation. While everyone can nominate books, only the judges who volunteered will be part of the selection process.

  17. Wow! Luella:

I just saw that I’m listed. Waaay neat!

I’d like to nominate Nelson’s Riddle by Neill G. Russell. Published by Tate Publishing. But am not sure if that is self-publishing or a small Christian pub house.

The other books I mentioned were:

The Book of Joby by Mark Ferrari Published by TOR. But I’ve researched them and he says he’s NOT a Christian. He just used the Christian worldview to write. Same goes for God’s Demon. Written by Wayne Barlowe. It’s a bit like Tosca’s book, but way more graphic. Published by TOR. But this guy pretty much thinks God is dead. Does a great job describing eternal damnation though. So I won’t recommend them…just the Russell book. And even that I’m not sure of because I’m not sure if the publishing company falls in with the requirements. -C
